Mental Health Therapy
Approach to Therapy
My approach to therapy recognizes the impact of past experiences, while empowering you to make meaningful choices in the present. We’ll explore how your personal history, cultural background, and current goals shape your life, creating a space for growth, self-compassion, and lasting change.
Do my past experiences matter?
Depending on who you ask, therapists will have different answers to this question. I believe that our past absolutely impacts our present experiences. For example, how we currently interact with other people is impacted by patterns in our relationships that developed years ago, such as our attachment styles. Past experiences will also impact how we make decisions in the here and now. In addition, if there is any trauma in your past, that can impact how we interpret our world, how we manage our emotions or how we make decisions in the future. So in our work together, I will encourage you to look at variables that you may feel is from your past.
What can I do in the present moment?
While recognizing the importance of past experiences, I also believe in having control and agency over our own lives. In other words, our past experiences do not have to dictate how we choose to live today, or how we define our future. We can choose what kind of person we want to be. There are lots of techniques that allow us to live the life that we want to live, such as practicing mindfulness techniques, learning to meditate, learning to talk to ourselves in a kind and compassionate way, saying “no” when someone crosses our boundaries, or committing to making changes in how we interact with others. I believe that we can live a kinder and more fulfilling life.

Why do cultural variables matter?
I believe that we are social beings that bring our values, morals, beliefs, customs, and perspectives to each interaction that we have. So how we are treated in societal systems, organizations, social groups, and other individuals impact our experiences. We also impact others by what we say, how we say things, how we react to others, or how we behave. In other words, how we behave in systems, social groups, and how we react to others as an individual also impact how others experience their lives.
